The night before
Set aside any of the following. Many of these items can be nice to incorporate with the props I will have along to give a personal touch:
Outfits for family photos.
In home sessions give you a lot of flexibility, but it’s also good to complement each other’s outfits. You can keep this comfy and simple in PJS, Jeans and solid colored shirts or have a few looks you may want to try if you’re feeling up for it. I’m happy to help pull looks together when I arrive as well.
Hats
Special blankets
Diaper covers/ Fitted pants. (loose clothing tends to photograph poorly)
2-3 outfits you may like to try for solo baby shots, with having your top choice picked out. Keeping it simple and shirtless is typically best.
Special mementoes, Uniform elements
Anything else you may have around your home that could be cute to put a baby in or items you think may be fun to use.
I bring along a variety of gender neutral toned blankets, swaddle wraps, and hats you are welcome to use.
Basket, posing pillows, floor-drop and professional lighting are also included.
THE MORNING OF
Please don’t go crazy cleaning and stressing out. Your babe will sense it and you feeling frazzled can make for a fussier shoot. It’s best to keep it laid back, give yourself time to feel good and turn up the heat to make it nice and warm. Rest assured that I am totally happy to move things out of the shot if needed, either in person or in photoshop!
White noise is always helpful, whether by machine, music or a TV, any noise they may be used to hearing at home will be great to surround them with.
The hour before I am due to arrive, try to keep them awake and entertained/stimulated. Wear them right out. Once I arrive, I can get them swaddled up tightly in my newborn posing wrap(nude toned) before you feed them to sleep.
Shoot time
I typically arrive 15 minutes prior to shoot time to sanitize myself and unload gear. I don’t bring a ton of stuff, only essentials that I can totally handle it on my own. Once I’m in, you can show me around, the things you’ve set aside and then hopefully baby will be ready to eat and take a nice long nap. We will need to have them in their first baby solo outfit prior to feeding to sleep. Then we wrap them up in a cozy blanket that will be used in the first round of photos as well while feeding and soothing.
To set up for the baby shots, a bed or couch near a window is great. Those are also great for indoor family shots. Blank walls are always great as well. I also have a floor drop I use when shooting in baskets. An open 10 square feet of space in a well lit room is most ideal. I can make anything work.
Once baby is asleep, we will let them go for about ten minutes of snuggles to really be conked out. Then, if comfortable, you can hand them over to me to begin posing and shooting. This is a perfect chance for you to step away, not only so they can’t smell and miss you as much, but so you can take a moment to breathe and change if needed. I am happy to guide you in posing or have you assist if that makes you most comfortable.
I will photograph them solo until they become fussy, then usually an outfit/diaper change and quick feeding are needed for shooting a second outfit solo or family shots, if you are ready to wrap up.
During feedings is a great time for me to capture detail shots of the nursery and candids of you all around the home.
To wrap up our shoot, I love to grab some family shots indoors and then bundle up to finish with a few shots outside. Pets and siblings are always encouraged to be a part of the whole experience. Grandparents are always welcome and love when they can even stop by to hop in at the end for outdoor family portraits.
Typically, two hours is plenty of time, but I’ll never leave until I feel you will be 100% satisfied with what we are able to capture!
post shoot
Within 2 weeks, your images will be uploaded to your gallery. You’ll have a minimum of 50 high resolution images to download. These will be hand edited for color correction, cropping + straightening, and prepared for print quality. You will be able to select three images for further retouching to include skin softening and removal of anything distracting, such as baby acne, scratches, lint, dry skin and stray hairs.
You will have consent be able to print and share downloaded images for personal use. I do offer a wide range of prints and albums, custom designed and printed on archival materials.
I am a huge print nerd and spent lots of time in college learning the technicalities. In addition to being museum quality and never fading, all prints and products ordered within your gallery will be further retouched (specific requests accepted) and prepped for printing and proper sizing. I can only guarantee the quality of any prints made within your gallery and often run incentives and promotions that will always be displayed at the top of your gallery when active.
